Owambe is a word commonly used by the Yoruba people of Nigeria, it can be said to be a large grandiose party which involves a lot of food, loud music and spraying of money to dancing persons, it is seen as the way of appreciating the celebrant.
This Art concept is a mixed media painting, done with Ankara (Yoruba wear) and oil colour, it depicts a pictorial representation of two Nigerian ladies, kitted in the regalia of the Yoruba people in preparation for the Owambe ceremony. It’s Saturday again, a work free day, a time to flenjo. In anticipation they wait, though maybe shy but fully prepared with their big dark shades like though no one will recognize them, it’s a confidence booster, beautiful beads around their neck, Gele (Head tie) on their head and Ankara wear on their Body.
An Owambe ceremony could be a celebration of life, it usually marks a milestone – a baby’# naming, wedding, 50th birthday, or even a funeral.
The Owambe is basically for celebration, so get prepared, go check for your ‘big bags’, full of money to spray, your ‘Aso oke’ properly ironed, and many more as the weekend draws near.
